One of Oklahoma’s oldest single families owned and operated funeral service providers The Brown-Cummings family has been working hard every day for four generations and nearly 100 years to ensure quality, value, caring service and exceptional customer satisfaction. Gerald L. Brown, Sr. was among the first graduating classes from the school of mortuary sciences of Chicago Ill. He traveled throughout the U.S. as a professional Embalmer with his Brother also a professional embalmer while in Enid he meet his beloved wife, Mary Parker The couple founded Brown Funeral Home together in July 1926 and Enid’s first ambulance service at it's current historical location. They prospered the funeral home through the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the Great Depression, the dust Bowl and the Second World War.
The second generation of family was Gerald L., JR. and Patsy Brown. Gerald, Jr. was born upstairs, above the funeral home in the family residence. He was a proud Veteran serving his country as a navy medic in WWII. He attended OU and then Dallas institute of Mortuary Sciences. He provided both the ambulance and the funeral service to the community.
In 1971 Joe Cummings married Becky Brown Cummings, daughter of Gerald and Patsy. Joe and Becky are the third generation of family. Both are Enid natives and Becky has been at the funeral home since birth. Joe joined the funeral home in 1976 and holds a bachelors and masters from O.SU. in English as well as a bachelors of science from U.C.O. . Gerald L. Brown, Jr. passed in 1983 and Patsy retired in 1991. At that time Joe and Becky purchased the funeral home to ensure the high stander of care for Enid and surrounding communities.
Shaun M. Cummings, Joe and Becky’s son, Grew up in the funeral industry and has a passion for helping families. After graduating from Dallas institute of Mortuary sciences Shaun worked at one of the country’s largest funeral homes in Dallas and then as a manager at a funeral home in Santa Fe, N.M. Shaun retuned proudly joining his families firm in 2000. Shaun is the great- grandson of Gerald Brown, Sr. and the fourth generation of the family at the funeral home. Shaun and his wife Amy have two daughters Emma and Willa.
